The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ is a research institution within the Helmholtz Association. The Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry is offering a 3-year full-time position (with the opportunity for permanent employment) for the Scientific Head of a NanoSIMS platform (m/f) code digit: 86/2011 for chemical microscopy consisting of a NanoSIMS L50 and an Electron Probe Micro Analyser (EPMA). 

The platform will be mainly used to study terrestrial biogeochemical cycles and microbiological systems. Research questions of collaborators from academia and industry from material science, geology or medicine should be also addressed. 

The responsibilities of the position include: In the first phase the scientific head will be responsible to establish the platform with respect to technical and scientific aspects. He will be responsible for developing scientific concepts in cooperation with a team of users of the facility, will represent our platform in the scientific community, and will establish relations with clients and external and internal users. He will lead the staff of the NanoSIMS platform and organise the relations between internal and external collaborators. 

The candidate will supervise the technical staff and provide training courses to students and clients and in the long term also for universities. The head of the unit will develop the scientific concepts for the platform in cooperation with a team of users of the facility. 

We seek a highly motivated and creative person with a strong interest in multi-disciplinary research to support our NanoSIMS platform in the field of natural and life sciences. His interests should cover areas from material science and geology over biogeochemistry and microbiology to medicine. The candidate is very encouraged to develop his own research project for the NanoSIMS platform and to built up an own research profile. 

Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent technical experience in the use of SIMS and EMPA technology, ideally in the field of microbial ecology or biogeochemistry. The candidate should be very motivated in developing research field for application of NanoSIMS and EMPA technology for the analysis of organic materials. We will evaluate positively the experience with Cameca SIMS or ENPA instruments. We expect excellent communication skills, competence for team work, leadership and the ability to acquire third party funding in cooperation with platform users. 

The candidate will be member of an international and innovative team, providing opportunities for professional and personal development. The place of work is Leipzig, Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level, salary group 14 TVÖD, depending on personal pre-conditions.
