The Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry (UFZ) is offering a 3-year full-time scientist position (with the opportunity for permanent employment) as a Facility Manager/Operator (m/f) code digit - 98/2011 - for a platform for chemical microscopy comprising a NanoSIMS L50 and an Electron Micro Probe Analyser (EMPA).

The UFZ is seeking a highly motivated and creative person with a strong interest in multi-disciplinary research to support our NanoSIMS platform in the field of life science. The research projects at the NanoSIMS platform will target terrestrial biogeochemical cycles and analysis of organic materials. Further analytical challenges of collaborators from academia and industry ranging from material science, geology to medicine should be addressed. We expect very good skills for communication, team work and leadership. A strong interest in the active development of new method and concepts to improve the technical measurement and data handling is expected.

The responsibilities of the position include:
In the first phase the facility manager will be responsible to set up the platform with respect to coordination of instrument orders, technical aspects, preparation laboratory, and other technical issues. Once the platform is set up he/she will be responsible for technical aspects, maintenance, repairs, method development and for day to day organisation of the work. He/she will train PhD students, internal and external collaborators how to analyse samples on SIMS and EMPA instruments. The candidate will support the head of the NanoSIMS unit and will supervise technical staff and provide training course covering technical aspects to students.

Our requirements:
We are searching for a person with a Ph.D. or equivalent technical experience (2-5 years) in engineering, physics, mass spectrometry relevant to SIMS and EMPA technology. Interest for life science and interdisciplinary work is mandatory. The candidate should have a very strong interest in developing applications of NanoSIMS and EMPA technology. We would positively evaluate experience with Cameca SIMS or EMPA instruments.

The salary will be according to the experience of the candidate and appropriate civil service level up to TVöD 14. The place of work is Leipzig, Germany.
